While the nature of University Policies may vary, a University Policy should generally be an official statement expressing the position of the University on an issue of University-wide importance. A University Policy:
- has broad application across University constituencies;
- exists to achieve compliance with applicable policies, laws, and organizational requirements; promote operational efficiencies; support the University's mission; reduce institutional risk; and/or promote ethical standards, integrity, and accountability;
- carries an expectation for compliance and consequences for non-compliance;
- is approved within the administrative authority of the University and/or the Board of Regents; and
- is a governing principle that mandates or constrains actions, establishes rights or obligations, or guides the decisions and actions of the University.
A University Policy may be titled using terms other than policy, for example the University’s Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure for the various faculty tracks.

The University Policy Library is the official collection of University Policies(see FAQ for What is a University Policy?). The University Policy Library functions as a central repository for all University Policies, ensuring they are easily accessible to members of the University community.
