University of Georgia Campus Notification for Emergencies and Crime Concerns

  • Last Updated: 06/08/2016
  • Effective Date:

Policy Statement
The UGA Police Department is Cleary Act compliant and recognizes the importance of notifying the university community when an event, incident or emergency situation warrants such notification for the purpose of providing information to students, faculty and staff so that they may make conscious and informed decisions in taking appropriate steps to safeguard themselves or in providing information that may assist in related police investigations.
Reason for policy
To explain when the UGA Police Department will initiate notification to the campus community following an incident.
Procedures

In the event a situation arises, either on or off campus, that, in the judgment of the Chief of the University of Georgia Police Department or his designee, constitutes an ongoing or continuous threat, a campus wide “timely warning” will be issued. The warning will be issued through a campus wide e-mail to all faculty, staff and students, as well as through local media outlets.

In addition to a timely warning, a UGAAlert notification will be issued when there is a severe threat to public safety and health of the entire campus that has not been contained or controlled and when immediate action is required on the part of the recipient group(s), (e.g. chemical spills impacting public health, tornado warnings, active shooters, etc.)

Anyone with information about an emergency situation or other situation warranting a timely warning or UGAAlert should contact the University of Georgia Police Department immediately at 706-542-2200.

For inquiries about reported incidents made to the UGA Police Department, the Daily Log may be reviewed online or in person by visiting the UGA Police Department.
